I`ve just bought a 70k miles 1988 300sl and on collection was handed a box containing bottles of Redex which the owner has been using:eek: Now I know the car is unleaded compatible from new ( it tells you on the fuel filler flap!!!) but can anyone tell me what effect the additive might have had and what should I do to remedy this? Thanks

Redex won't do any harm - just an added expense.

Remedy? Simple - stop using it.

Hope this helps.

Phew! Thanks for that. I had wondered if simply not using the Redex was the answer but had been told ,what might be an old wives tale, that once you use it you must continue!

Cheers

I think that was easy-start

Redex won't do you any harm, possibly some good. I run some through my lot every now and then.

Excellent,so full tank of Shell Ultima seems the way forward.

Thanks for your reply. So,a little Redex now and then is ok? What are the benefits? I was concerned that the additive might have been "unhealthy" for the unleaded engine.I must get upto speed with unleaded/classics,Im used to working on my 1950`s Austins, lol.

afaik - redex is a fuel system detergent. Good for keeping things in tiptop condition, removing gunk from the injectors etc. Probably a little stronger than the detergents in 'optimax' or 'ultimate' fuel but basically does the same job.
Personally I use a tank of untimate every 3-4 fill ups to keep things clean.
That said, if it came with a bottle, it proves you've bought a well-loved motor.
And no, there is no problem with stopping. The car doesn't get dependant on it.

Thanks for the info about the Redex ,it certainly follows with the rest of the car as for being well cared for.

RedX was the first firm to make a cleaning the system additive via the fuel tank back in the early 60's in the beginning it was an upper cylinder lubricant

Oh the memories! On every third or fourth fill up, a couple of shots of Redex. Reminds me of courting.

As in a 'couple of shots'...!!!??? ;-)

The girl pump attendant who gave me several shots was lovely, I took her out for several months, sadly I called for her one evening and she had died in her sleep aged 21, I can never forget that.:cry:

redex !

spooky ! I filled my car up this morning in a garage I don't normally use, and as I was waiting to part with 50 quid (!) an amount which in days gone by once bought me a car - I saw some bottles of Redex - petrol & diesel versions on the shelf - hadn't seen it for years.
any views on using it in a diesel?????
