my burl wood trim is all in good nick apart from the one in the centre with the electric window buttons etc , on this its got scratches and looks a bit faded , obviously the previous owner ( a bloke i know at work who looked after it religously apart from this ofc!) had a habit of putting items down on it. any tips to restore it myself?

I saw a post once on a full refurbish. Looked like a lot of effort as he stripped it down to base wood and relaquered it. Beyond my abilities anyway.
It was A US site I think.
Personally I'd hire a French Polisher for an hour!

When I respray wood, I flat after spraying with a 1200 paper then polish with Tcut, and Tcut will remove surface scratches, do take care on the edges

the panel is screwwed down , inside the centre compartment box theres two screws to remove that , then theres one holding the panel down , it slides out after this , but go careful with the switchs as there holders are stapled into wood , gentle encouragement to disconnect the panel is needed :)
