Called my Merc dealers yesterday enquiring about the purchase of the dipstick for checking the oil level, told me that they have stopped selling them to anybody that is not trade, said that they have just had a block put on, and also not to give any technical info to the private owners, this sort of treatment really spoils the pleasure of owning a mercedes.cheers Dave

Not all dealers have adopted this attitude...try another dealer.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Stuff the dealer. Heres one on Ebay:

If you're around Manchester, feel free to pop by my house and we'll dip it using mine.

Alternatively if you'd like to make your own, here is the end:

The length of the tube and handle isn't really important, it just needs to be long enough to hit the bottom of the sump. Others have suggested flexible curtain wire (for hanging net curtains). The important bit is what you see in the image above.

The length of the gearbox dipstick in my boot is about the width of the boot lid.

As an aside, when Jaguar first brought out their V12 engine owners had a lot of problems with loosing oil. They were complaining of smokey exhausts and having to top up the engine oil every time they checked the level.

After many tests and head scratching Jaguar discovered the problem. The cars were sent out with the wrong lenth dip sticks, They were too short:rolleyes:

Hello

My dealer initially refused to sell me a dipstick, but I persisted and grumbled in a good natured way and they changed their mind, so I think it's at their discretion.

They are quite happy to sell transmission fluid, so logically they must also be happy to sell the means to work out if/how much fluid is needed. Try that line on them. Ditto they are also quite happy to sell the little red tamper tags too that go on the dipstick cap. Again why would they sell these and not the dipstick itself.

Basically if you pitch up at the showroom and make it clear that you aren't moving until they sell you one I'm sure they will. One of the advantages of the new dealership open-plan layout is that you can be talking with the parts guys in the same place where they are selling new cars and servicing, and if you have a reasoned and polite discussion with them, in the end they don't want to appear to be unreasonable in front of all their other customers.

Best wishes

I think the confusion is that some MB parts men consider the dipstick to be in the status of a 'MB workshop tool' which, if this was the case, can not be sold to the general public.

I see Parrot's dip stick has marks for 25 deg and 80 deg.

Am I right in thinking that the 5 speed box should be checked,

at running temp,
engine running,
on level ground,
looking for 55mm depth of ATF.

And the 7 speed box needs star to check the ATF level ?

Hi Dave, this sort of treatment by a main dealer reminds me of when I owned a "grey import", a Mitsubishi Pajero. I wanted to change the cam belts and although they would sell me them for a "Shogun", they were not allowed to confirm that the parts were compatible to the import model, although it was the same engine ! Bought them anyway, surprise surprise they were the same.

There is a degree of sense in this. If the dealer says "Yes, it's the same", and it turns out not to be, then the part comes back and there is hassle

I would imagine that there might be some aspects of import cars that the local-market microfiche / parts system doesn't have information on
