I note that this ebay trader has 9 or 10 of these custom registrations, all selling for GBP999.00. He's not been a trader for long and his feedback isn't 100 percent.

I would therefore advise anyone interested in making a purchase to 'trade carefully'. View the trader's shop with caution too because my browser is issuing 'phishing' warnings.

Does any member know of any way of checking registrations other than via the DVLA?

You might be able to check with DVLA as the VRM is on retention.
I certainly would check, and would agree only to pay when the paperwork is completed (3 weeks)

You can check here, below, on registration numbers which are on vehicles. The ones above are on retention therefore wont show up. I see a "MERCEDES 190 AUTO 4 DOOR SALOON 1997cc (31/12/1989) PETROL " owner has the reg I want (CHA5E)
