Will regular gas hurt the engine of a 1997 E-320. We have a gas shortage in Atlanta because of Ike and I can't find premium gas.

If by regular gas you mean 90 Octane as opposed to 95 then in the short term no, but you will get lower performance and pinking under acceleration, especially when cold.

In the long term I would have thought that this wouldn't be good for the engine. I'm sure that someone more knowledgeable than me, such as Malcom, will put me right.

I've done it myself, by mistake in Germany where regular is 90 Octane, unlike in England where it's 95. It didn't appear to cause any long term damage, although I only ran it for a single tank full at motorway speeds.
