So I had me wee coupe for 6 months before going for a remap, stock it should have been 143HP but when I got to the Dyno it was only marked at 128. 9HP so it lost 14.1HP in 14yrs, it now sits at 172HP @ 303 ft-lbs after 2 tries mind you. With 8months between to 2 remaps, the 1st one only really felt like an Italian tune up... After the 2nd remap the performance difference and my MPG went up to 37MPG from 34MPG to and from work, don't get me wrong it's only a 8min drive through town with a few traffic lights.

The power when I put the foot down is really impressive, with the Auto Box my only gripe is it doesn't change when I want it to, even when I put the foot down it doesn't always change gear? And I've noticed if I put the gear box into manual and 1st and put my foot down it'll run up through the gears till it gets to 5th it runs up to around 3000 revs drops to 4th for around 1second then back to 5th without lifting my foot.

Question 1, for all the enthusiasts out there is should it change gear when I put the foot down? i.e when wanting to overtake a car on the motorway?
Question 2, an idea why it would go to 5th 4th then back to 5th again without lifting my foot.
Question 3, anybody think a gearbox service would be benificial?

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome

More power and more economy, a miracle...

The autobox should kick-down when you press the accelerator down.

Though often people don't press hard enough to operate the kickdown switch.

There's part throttle kickdown usually of one gear , then just past full throttle kickdown usually of two gears ( not best for a diesel when peak torque drop off is 2000 rpm )

No fresh ATF in it's life ?

It needs a fluid and filter change after that mileage.
Get it done, but before that, check the kickdown operation.

As LK says, the kickdown is operated by a pressure switch under the accelerator pedal, and you will need to floor the pedal before it will operate. You can actually feel the switch moving when you put the pedal to the floor.
If it works by doing that, the gearbox is probably fine - so a filter and fluid change is the next step.

PS. Make sure that any floor mat you may have is not covering the switch and impeding its operation.

Also can depend on how you press the accelerator, if you role on gently it’s unlikely to kickdown, However if you stab at it it’ll probably drop a couple of gears
