Hi There
i have been quoted £140 from a merc dealer for a new remote key fob for 1998 e class 300td avantgarde. They tell me there is only 1 place in the U.K. that has the machine to do these.Anybody any idea as to any other place that can supply these.
Regards Brian.

It depends on what is wrong with it. If the switches are just dead, then you could buy one form Ebay and swop the electronics over from yours.

Switches all work fine and even replaced the battery. The fob opens and closes the doors and boot. When entered into the ignition it does not engage properly and wont let the ignition be switched on.

yes i thought that.
Dont like the thought of spending £140 for spare key after spending £80 today for new metal water pipe that runs along the back of the engine.

To be fair if you could get them elsewhere our cars would be going missing regularly. £140 is comparatively reasonable compared to a lot of manufacturers.

remotes - immobilisers

My remote packed up recently - A-class year 2000 flip blade 2 button - bought one off Ebay - problem is these are fitted with an immobiliser chip - so even if you swap the key blade and get the c/locking to work - it will not start the car. ( start error on dash) You can not take these apart to swap the chip - they are glued and you will destroy it trying. - unless someone out there knows how to get round this? - can the car be set for the new chip?

No key has to be set to the car, once programmed they are set for life.

update on remotes

Went to my local Merc dealer today and ordered new key/remote. Total inc VAT was £117.00 this will also work with my Mercedes dealer fit ( Scorpion ) alarm. They comfirmed that there is only one place in UK that can do these hence a wait of between 5 to 10 days. ( usually 5 ish ) .

Some people tell me that some Merc garages have the machine to reprogram the chip on keys bought on Ebay. My merc garage in Belfast tells me they cant.

The people who say they can be reprogrammed are usually selling them...

I got my key remote nice and clean,(not the keyless one) by washing it at 40c in my trouser pocket, it still works fine.
