Hi

Newbie here. I'm looking at a used E320CDi (2004). The spec's good but it has a Nokia 6310 type phone holder in the central armrest. I'd rather it wasn't there - I'd prefer just storage. Is it easy to remove and what could go there instead?

Thanx

Ian

The cradle can be unplugged and you can use the compartment for anything of your choice.

Hi Malcolm

Thanx for that. But is it just the cradle - there looks like theres some space between where the cradle sits and the bottom of the lift up compartment - is this hollow or are there wires and stuff in there? What is in a car not fitted with telephone facilities?

Thanx for the welcome!

The thing is, I was able to unscrew it but it was too wide to fit through the gap available. I think I will have to take the entire centre console out!

I'm sure it could be done but the standard unit has a different lid (not split so opens from the front rather than in the middle) so I suspect there are other differences too.
I'd imagien you'd need a new lid and upper section and would need to dismantle the lower part of the console to disconnect the coiled wiring.
Is it really worth it?

I removed mine recently as the entire kit kept falling into the passenger footwell and I never use it - its an ancient cradle so this might not apply but there is a rubber cover in the middle of the cradle with nokia written on it - prize that off and there is a big screw underneath which holds the cradle to its mount.

Aerial cable unplugged, phone connection disappeared under the dash and was disconnected with scissors (no ill affects yet...)

Yours was an aftermarket fitting, the MB version is a lot more invasive.
