Can anyone advise me if there is a product on the market that will remove white gloss paint from a black car. Kids have thrown this from a bridge.

I would use turps or white spirit to remove the gloss paint it shouldn't harm the paint on the car. then give it a good polish.

I get gloss paint on the jeep all the time, as the wife regularly scrapes it past the garage door. I just use white spirit to dissolve it. The car paint is cellulose based and the gloss is white spirit based so there's no chance of harming the car's paintwork. Then as Ian says, a good coat of polish and good as new.

Thanks for the reply, however i thought that car paint had no cellulose in it anymore. I was concerned that the spirit would dull and effect the paintwork.
Have you any other ideas?? please. Dealer ship suggests respray, what a surprise

Depends on the car

You don't say what age the car is so we've no way of knowing what paint it has

Try white spirit on a hidden area (under the bonnet?) to see what the result is. If it's OK I'd remove the white paint asap befoe it hardens completely

Failing that I'd go to a local bodyshop and ask them. Paint is their business

They say it's 'water' based but clearly its more complex than that as it would fade in the rain!! White spirit shouldn't damage car paintwork. It can only dull the paint if it is either abrasive or chemically attacks it, either by being the same make up, or acidic. Whatever it is based on, it isn't white spirit and white spirit is neither abrasive or acidic. The old rule of try a small inconspicous area first applies but I wouldn't be concerned. As I say, I use white spirit on the Jeep all the time and all it ever removes is the gloss. It does leave it dull, but thats the residue rather than any damage and cleans off easily with a decent polish (Mer, turtle wax etc).
Before I came up with that, I used Tcut to clean it up. Unfortunatley, as it was more regular than I expected, this did do damage.

If in doubt, call a car valeter in the yellow pages, they should be able to advise as they will deal with this type of damage regularly.

MB started with water based paint with the start of the 124 on the first cars around 1987 the paint was too hard. One saw cars around with huge blisters and stone chips, some cars looked as though they had been sandblasted, by late 1989 they had it sorted, well lets ignore the E class. White spirit will not harm it provided it is not soaking in it. After you have got it off, give the area a good waxing.

Thanks to everyone for their advice, i tried the white spirit and it has worked. Since finishing the job i have been told that a hot jet wash also washes the paint off. Many thanks
