You done well to get the alternator off with these water cooled ones!! Why are you changing it? Did you know you can buy the one-way freewheel without buying the complete unit?

Hi all

Just looking to resurrect this thread as it looks closest to the 'challenge' that I have!
53 plate E320CDi 99K miles. Suspect that the alternator has gone and confirmed the same with a multimeter. Usual warning lights, failure of convenience functions, etc.
Doesn't look to be a water cooled alternator at all.
There's '200' stamped on the back of the alternator which I assume to be 200a output. £150 quid for an exchange recon unit.
Sounds like I can get a new reg pck and set of brushes.....are these only available from MB? What sort of cost?
Thing is, space is so tight to remove the alternator......even struggling to see where the belt tensioner is.
Any guidance on how to get the alternater off and out would be very much appreciated?
Will likely tackle the job myself but if time is against me I'll use an Indie. Any recommendations around the Strathaven/East Kilbride/Hamilton area?

Cheers.

Thanks for the info. Fitting the reg pack with the alternator in place?......now that looks like a tough task with the space available. I'll look at it again tomorrow and maybe give that a bash.

For fitting the reg pack in-situ, do I need to strip much away other than the plastic bellypan underneath the car?

Well, if you have a local independent like MBS.....cherrish them!
Spoke with 2 seperate independents in Glasgow, both of which appear to be dumbfounded that a regulator pack (or any type of repair kit for alternators) could or would be availabe from MB!
And the quote for a replacement Bosch unit + drive belt supplied and fitted......the thick end of 650 quid!

I'm not going to name the Indie right now as I'm going to have to let them do the work tomorrow and take the hit.

I'll check the quality of their work and feed back to you all.

MBS - open a unit in cantral Scotland!

Just replaced the alternator and new drive belt on my E320 yesterday.
Though I done this myself, rather than pay labour costs.

To replace just the reg pack, you would need to remove the undertrays... its a tight fit there, and I couldnt do it, as one of the nuts had rounded off, and i couldnt grip it.

but removal is pretty simple with the fan out.. It didnt take me long :)

Good luck, I hope it solves your problems:)

Thanks.

Was the reg pack you bought a genuine MB part?

Do you have the part No.?

Hi all

Just closing out on this post.

Had a local indie (Glasgow) replace the alternator and drive belt.

There were 2 recommended indie's, neither of which would entertain the idea of just replacing the regulator/brush pack!
As I said before, if you have a REALLY GOOD local indie, value them!

Not all independents are the same. I wasn't impressed!

Good news is that the car is now healthy again.
