I need to remove the alternator to replace the idler pulley on my 02reg W163.

My main dealer will now sell me the idler pulley (£90) but won't sell me the removal tool. Can someone tell me if I need any special tools for this ? and any torque settings where available.

Cheers Black,

I havesourced the pulley from elsewhere for a fraction of the price. The supplier is also selling me the tool for removing the pulley from the alternator. I hope that this is all I need.

Thanks, Mark

Ah..........When idler pulley was mentioned in the original post i didnt realise that it was the alternator pulley that was the intended subject.

As mine was seized solid the only tools i needed for removal was a large adjustable pipe wrench that i used to hold the outer circumference of the pulley and a splined socket for the centre bolt.

There is absolutely no need to remove the alternator, the job is easily performed in situ (from underneath).

Mine cost £67 (inc vat) from MB.

To take the tension off the belt, I assume that the torx bolt on the tensioner is the only thing I need to touch.

I love driving both of my cars, but recently I am becoming a bit disallusioned with reliability of my W163 & W203.

Cheers, Mark

I think we all have spells of being disillusioned with our cars, it normally goes away and you will fall in love again
