Hi all

A friend has a Japanese spec 500CLS that does not go over a certain speed (I think its 180kph or 112mph).

Is there a way of removing this speed restriction?

Thanks

While some say that there is a device fitted, I have never seen or heard of such a thing before on all of the MB material that I have

If there is one then would it not be the same as the 155mph speed limit programmed into the engine ECU?

I would imagine that any tuning house which can clear the 155mph restriction will be able to do the same with the japanese one.

There are generic de-limiters available for all Jap cars - I had one made by Blitz for my Japanese import Celica GT-Four. Wiring instructions usually come with them too so it's worth looking for one and seeing if that will solve the issue.

Just for clarity though, the limit is hard coded in to the ECU on Japanese models - what the de-limiter does is fool the system in to thinking it hasn't hit that limit yet, not remove it as such. It still comes in, just somewhere around 200mph instead is all ;)

Hope thats of some help at least.

Cheers,
Mark

On some older cars just fooling the car into thinking it hasn't hit the limit yet would be fine, but on cars like MBs, wouldn't it interfere with lots of other electronics, like engine tuning, gearbox gear changing, stability control, airbag deployment, etc...

Actually no - the speed limit part is just a simple fuel cut really when you get down to it that comes in when the speed hits 112mph - the Japanese national speed limit. Everything else relating to the things you describe aren't affected by this. There are plenty of auto box Supras running around using these things and have no problems with gear changes, stability control etc, and they were expensive supercars when they came out so not basic systems on those either.

Cheers,
Mark

Surely 112mph is enough. The legal limit is 70. Don't be greedy!

Depends where you live in the World - or where you drive. If you are holidaying in Europe and travelling down the unrestricted sections of the Autobahn you may hold the traffic up !:):) (The original poster is also in Pakistan, not the UK, maximum speed limit 120kph)
