hi again, do any of you use a syphon to remove the engine oil?. The reason I ask is that I`ve owned the motor for 3 years and had it serviced at an approved garage, they`ve done the last 3 services A, B, A and it will soon be due the B service, in the past it has had the following in addition to service items, rear diff oil changed (at my request), new fuel filter, new pollen and engine air filters, brake fluid change, a/c re :-gassed, new water pump, new oxygen sensor and brakes all round 3k ago. So seeing as it is due the full service and really all that needs changing is the oil and filter I will do it myself as I am keeping the car so no future service record is required. It seems easier to syphon out the oil than putting it on ramps or stands plus I`m not getting any younger. cheers.

I always use a suction pump.
Only car I don't is the SL as it has no dipstick.

Yes a vacuum pump wins every time... with the oil filter on top of the engine too the oil change is so clean and easy.

I used a smaller round Pela type for ages but bought this earlier this year... a far better bit of kit.

Heres a question...
Is it possible to syphon out the oil if the engine does not have a dipstick?

It is best to drain out via the sump drain plug .That way everything comes out in one go . I do this because i have a magnetic sump plug that i need clean off . So i need to drainmy oil this way .. On the W124 M103 you can do the filter change , and oil change, all from above the car, via the engine compartment ,on some models thast is .
But for those that cant do it this way , one , because you have to remove the engine tray and two you find getting under your car more and more of a pain , you can use a good 12 volt extraction pump.
Then you just push the small nylon pipe down the dip stick tube after dip stick is removed , connect up to your cars battery, just switch it on and let the pump do its job . Some extractors ,like the one i have , come with a catch tank all in one unit . Dont use mine any more but you never know . Then you just hook up on to the battery ,put the nylon pipe down the dipstick hole switch on ,,then switch off when nothing is coming out of the see through nylon pipe .

Ron i recon there must be an extraction point on your engine .Most garages extract the old engine oil now, so all cars need to have one. Ypu do have one its at the back left hand side of ebgine under the cover your looking for ab yellow pull out dipstick see pic . Though imagine what is left in the last spoon full that the vacuum extractor does not extract. o_O

As someone mentioned earlier the sump plug used to be magnetic to catch any travelling debris.

In todays world though we don't have time to undo a sump plug .

Took 10 mins ago do mine.

Misterdog Well . you dont have time to do a sump plug .. you see there are two types of car owners ,. .Those that do, and those that dont. Each to his own .

Some cars no longer have a sump plug.

Some cars the sump plug doesn't extend fully to the very bottom of the sump sitting up to 5mm up the side or with an internal reinforcement leaving a small amount of oil behind.
I don't believe there is any difference for most cars in oil remaining using a vacuum pump correctly.

There's probably more oil caught in internal casting recesses in the engine than is ever left in the sump after sucking it out.

Only Family cars that I don't use the Draper 10 ltr extraction pump on are the two Skoda Superbs, because you have to get underneath them anyway to get at the Filter But everything else, is exttracted. And a word of warning to alll oil changers, monitor how much oil comes out,,,and never ever, put the recommended amount back in when refilling.. If the recommended Qty is 6.5 ltrs, then only put 6 ltrs in. Start engine, check for leaks , then drive it and allow to settle down ( I allow it to rest overnight ) Check it next morning, while cold, and depending on the reading either top up or remove enough to show the correct level,

Yep really important re the quantity. Also I always measure the oil removed the first time I use a vac extractor on a particular car and see how it matches up with stated capacity. You have to allow a certain difference for oil in the filter and galleries but if it's way different time to see if the pick up tube can be twisted to get in any lower.
