Hi,

I have noticed that when I open my boot on my C270 (saloon), I hear a screw roll around from inside the paneling somewhere. Nothing life threatening, however now I know it's there my OCD has taken over and I have to atleast try to fix it.

I noticed that the number plates have been changed at some point and the bottom left rear screw (circled blue) is missing. I figure this is what is rolling about inside the boot lid.

From what I understand, underneath the panel to which the number plate holder attaches, there is a gap between the number plate panel and the molded metal skin of the boot lid and I think the screw has gotten in there!

So far I have located a bolt (circled green) which holds the panel to the boot lid, is anyone able to provide some insight on how to remove the red highlighted panel please?

I have already had the interior carpeting on the inside of the bootlid off and tried to locate the screw in there but with no joy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
John

Hi Malcolm,

Thank you for your link... this partly explains whats going on in there.

Not keen on removing the part that the number plate holder attaches to (incase I break it). Also there seems to be an intermittent error message on the right hand number plate light and I don't want to make it any worse.

I will have to remove the number plate at some point anyway as the plate holder is missing a screw (the one thats rattling inside the bootlid I guess :p )
I might give it a try then... failing that I'll give it to my dealship to fix (they will no doubt know better than me where to go with this).

Thank you again for your help,

John

The number plate is held on by 4 threaded lugs riveted to the rear panel, when the screws corrode they break off when trying to remove them and the chances are that it the remians of a stud that you can hear

Thanks Malcolm,

Still to tackle the number plate / rattle issue, however I have looked into the intermittent right/rear numberplate light. Upon inspection it was corroded, so I cleaned up the terminals, removed the wildlife and good as new :)

Regards,
John

The rear trim comes off quite easily you can then take out the rattle
