Hi,

I have a screw in my tyre (you can just see it at about 3 o clock). Is that likely to be repaiable or is it new tyre time? Pretty sure garage will try and tell me it's too close to the edge

Pumped tyre up and it's holding pressure pretty well, but without a spare, I don't want to leave it be.

Any thought appreciated.

Looks fixable , was told by my local tyre place that as long as the inside repair patch is totally flat and does not stick onto the sidewall then it is repairable.

depends where you take it. I'd imagine that the likes of ATS & Kwik Fit etc will sell you a new tyre but a proper vulcanised repair is possible at the right places. I could suggest a place up here but unfortunately not in Pompey

If the tyre is holding pressure why not try and remove the screw carefully before you drive to the tyre shop. Mark the spot on the tyre Before you go so they can find it OK

Hi,
When I got in the car this morning, no TPMS message was showing. Drove less than a mile to work and still no message. Drove to the bottle bank (like you do) and still nothing showing. Drove back to work and when I got into the car park a warning came up saying 18.5 in one of the rear tyres. Pumped it back up and so far it's holding pressure. So, fairly sure if I take the screw out it will fail.

Within 25mm of the edge not repairable - looks close - a small independent tyre dealer would be the place to go

I'd leave the screw in place ;)

The back of the plug must sit flat on the tyre so you have lucked in, think a couple more mm to the outside and you would be out of luck

I wouldn’t trust Kwik Fit but I have always found ATS very straightforward in their dealings. When Katie had her Jazz serviced last November, the Honda garage tried to tell her the tyre was dangerous and it was recorded on her record and would invalidate her insurance. We popped in to ATS and they said tyre was fine and it passed the MOT in March (also at ATS) with no advisories.

They repaired a puncture on my C207 few years ago without any attempt to sell me a new tyre.

I know it's after the event, but to me that does look repairable, as it is quite a distance from the sidewall. I have had similar repaired in the past.

Main thing is, avoid skips and similar where there are screws on the ground. I had to drive past the skip area when I left work, and I used to regularly get punctures.

Thanks for the sage advice :) I've done quite well with this car (first puncture). I'll change it in the next 12 months so hopefully no more.

I think it entirely depends on the particular branch.

Took one my previous W202s to ATS for wheel alignment. Their equipment had two tangs which needed to go over the tyre under the arch. There wasn't enough clearance between the bodywork and the tyre so they forced them on chipping the paint in two places on each rear arch. Refused to refund any money and offered to touch the paint in themselves. If they couldn't even use their alignment equipment properly I wasn't gonna let them loose with a paint pen lol. Given them a wide berth since.
