I've just bought a '98 C180 and downloaded a copy of the MOT advisory notice that wasn't with the vehicle paperwork.

It suggests that the rear brake pads are wearing thin and two of the metal brake pipes running along the subframe (one front, one front to back) are rusting. The brake pedal is spongy so rather than just replace the brake fluid, i'll change the bad parts as well with the hope of curing the sponginess.

I've done this sort of work before but just wondered if there was anything I needed to know about working on a Mercedes brake system before I started (bleeding wheel order, etc). Is there a chance that this car would have ABS and would this affect the way the brake work/bleeding is done?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi there , your car definitely has Abs and it does not affect the way you bleed the brakes;start with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder and work in.
When changing pads its best to open the bleed nipple to prevent any contamination of the Abs pump from dirty fluid but as you are going to change pipes I assume you will be doing a fluid change anyway.
The front to rear pipes are a bit of a job as they pass above the rear subframe and the recommendation is to drop the subframe to do this job. It is possible to reroute the pipes; so long as the are kept away from contact with moving parts and securely clipped in place there will be no problem MOT wise, good luck.

I'm in the process of replacing the pipe from the the front to the rear, it is a bit fiddly to get the pipe over the subframe, and it needs to be located in the clips if your car has them.

General rule of thumb is start bleeding the one furthest away from the master pedal, but due to the route of the pipes, I start with the offside rear first.
