Replaced MAF - improved - now jerking occasionally??

So after replacing the MAF - the kick down appears somewhat better but still not right...
Over the last week, I have noticed occasionally when slowing, the car will jerk and a thud as it slips into low gear.... hoping this isnt terminal? Maybe happened around 3 times. Drives better in W mode.
I ve been reading a few posts - does it sound like ATF contamination? If so, where do I stand with costs etc - cars only worth 2-3k max so dont really want to spend a fortune on it.... its a 1998 E240 with 77k. Full mbsh.

Try changing the g/box oil if it hasn't been done recently

Was the new MAF a gen one or bought off ebay.
