I took my E250 in to have the aircon re-gassed. They pointed out there was a diesel leak on injector #3 which has corroded several of the leak-off pipes which also need to be replaced.

Does anyone know what sort of repair cost might be involved? Is this a big job? I am bracing myself.

And is this the sort of work that can be carried out by an independent garage, or is it complicated enough to need the Mercedes dealership to do?

I'd look at a diesel specialist rather than MB - a contractor working for me had his ML270 go up in flames on the M4 as the injector retaining bolt came out and the injector sprayed diesel over the exhaust - It had been to MB for injector work - they'd damaged the threads and used a helicoil insert which failed under load on the M4...

A main dealer explaied the damage. One fuel injector needs to be replaced, plus several leak-off pipes as they have deteriorated from having diesel sprayed on them from the leaking injector. They think it's been leaking for months possible years. And the cylinder head cover needs replacing.

Strange that I've never noticed any diesel smell or leakage on the ground.

They estimate £3,000 at least. Other injectors might need replacing, which they won't know until they begin stripping the parts down.

Ouch!

3 k.! I would be swotting up on doing that myself! My w168 was just over 3k and I have had near 20 Yr out of it!
If u can't do it do as advised seek a diesel shop, preferably one reccomended from the forum.

Just stick with a forum recommended specialist, it will save back and forth aggravation further down the line.

£3k! I’d tell them you can get an old Volvo for less than that and it will outlast their dealership!

A Mercedes Independent specialist would serve you better.
'If' a new injector/s is to be fitted it / they want setting up on Star.
But I would expect him to now beforehand rather than take a suck it see approach.
This "we don't know, let's see what we find" doesn't instill confidence. "And then we found" "it's better to have it done while 'we' have it in bits" sounds like a likely result.

You write the cheque, and they fill in the number of zeros, is an attractive business strategy.

ajlsl600, after you suggested doing it myself I checked youtube. Quite a few videos showing how to replace the injector seals. It looks doable - no major disassembly work needed, and only a few special tools. The biggest difficulty seems if the injectors get stuck and need a long time with a slide hammer to get them out. But in the videos there were far worse cases with much more carbon build-up that I have, and they still seemed to come out relatively easily.. None of the videos seemed to require the injectors themselves to be replaced, just the copper washers, and a good clean-up of the injectors, the injector wells, and injector seats.

Here is what mine look like. I put water around all the injectors, started the engine, and it is indeed just one leaking, injector #3, second from the top in the image. What do people reckon about how mine looks - easy job, average job, or difficult?

Perhaps I should start a thread on the DIY forum for more advice about how to proceed.

was recommended on here a month ago

BH weekend & forum suffering from gremlins so hang on in there
I've called Autoclass for a couple of pieces of work. Both times their quote was the same or *higher* than a main dealership! But definitely worth me calling them for a quote on this.

I see A.W. Diesel Services is has great reviews on Google. Can anyone on here recommend them?

An update on this. I had a Mercedes specialist replace the injector seal, clean up all the carbon deposits, and fix a small oil leak from rocker cover. £375 total.

A fraction of the £3000 that the main dealer quoted.

Long time since it did that but I make up a one of cutter to lightly clean the washer seal face in head and when I near ready too do job I soak around injectors on hot engine the night before. I also have a set of slide hammers, for that job. Forethought makes it much easier. Unless one prefers to write a cheque.

If not leaking too much put perpetrating spray all around when eng is warm. Let it soak in overnight.or even 2 nights Make or get access to a slide hammer.. I used to make up a washer injector seat cleaner by turning out a dummy injector from round bar and using the turning cobalt to scribe lines out off the tool base, using the lathe to create a sharp ridge to GENTLY clean the internal injector seat, remove any carbon build up. Have access to a sourse of compressed air to blow the crud out or apply clean grease and an wooden valve grinding stick to get rubbish out.
