The headlamp bulb on my A140 has just blown.

I have managed to find out how to remove it (via a flap above the wheel arch)

The origional bulb is an Osram H7/55w.

Whilst it is out (and one blown) is there any point in "upgrading" the bulbs to something like "Phillips Vison Plus H7", "Phillips Blue Vision", "Phillips All Weather" or just stick in a standard Halfords replacement bulb? (i.e www.powerbulbs.com / http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/ae_news_story.php?id=18467)

Any thoughts or recommendations??

I upgraded mine because MB fit all weather golden bulbs to E class. I think it's to get you to upgrade to xenon. Very dim.
Fit super white bulbs and you will actually be able to see the road in the dark

Yep...I agree with DM. Upgraded mine last winter as the standards were pretty poor.

Have MB lost the plot with the A class? having to access the headlamp through a flap in the wheelarch?

Sounds bizarre, what ever happened to lifting the bonnet?

Dave B, what did you upgrade to? Make?Type? please.
My experience has always been to use Phillips as quality is generally superior to alternatives at car factors.

Ernest, sorry for the delay.

I think they were either Lucas "Blue Lightning" or the Philips bulbs - I've used both makes as I also upgraded my VW.

Excellent Dave thank you, must admit had not heard of Lucas BL but Phillips certainly goes on my Xmas list.

Jason, I am unhappy with the lighting on my C class & I was unhappy with lighting on 190s. Main beam does not throw sufficient intensity or spread & dip is poor for my liking. I have experienced much better lighting on cars that are thirty years old.
Having read the recommendations from Dieselman & Dave B & the Auto Express report. I am prepared to pay the price....but not for Xenon.

The lamp, (you plant bulbs!!) is only a part of the headlight, if the lenses or relectors are not up to the job, then you are wasting you time with fancy lamps, (bulbs).

Improved Lighting on C Class

I too found that the lighting on our C36 below par compared to my wifes z3, I mentioned it to one of my 'boy racing' employees and they suggested that ELTA Spectrum lamps are good replacements. I bought some 'intensive white' lamps and found an instant improvement.

They get my endorsement!
