My 2002 ML-270 failed MOT as the horn wasn't working. I had a quick look, and the relays are clicking away when I try to use it. I touched the horn on the drivers side and one of the terminals fell off, so it is a reasonable assumption that this had failed. I called local MB dealer and have been told that there are 2 horns and they are approx £25 each (1 hi & 1 lo). A local motor factor does a "universal fit" one for £9. Should I go with this, or do I need to get the MB ones as they are an odball fitment / voltage etc....

Take the horns off and give them a clean inc. the wiring terminals, also clean the body where the horns bolt onto the car. Ensure the wiring is ok to the horns, try the horns again making sure that the horn is bolted back to the vehicle so as to maintain a good earth.
If still not working check at the Horn terminals for 12V.

Will do, but at least 1 will need replacing as the terminals have fallen-off.
