hi all, Had gearbox probs with my c180, diagnostics showed valve block and speed sensor fault. so I purchased new parts from mercedes that were exchange items and cost £580. I was a bit disapointed to find that i was replacing with recon parts but the guy at the parts desk said no worries cos theres a 2 year warranty, i was happy with that. So fitted block and conductor plate as a complete unit. 3 weeks later and replacement part develops a fault, dianostics showing an N3 fault code relating to the conductor plate. Phoned merc parts and told them that the part has a fault and i want to exchange it under the warranty. They told me that now the part was fitted it comes under service warranty and I would have to take the car in and have it checked and if any faults occur with this part then it would be changed for free. Car went in today and diagnostics read that there is a fault with the conductor plate as i had already confirmed. However! because they never fitted the part they could not confirm that the part was not damaged during installation so a labour cost would be incurred to remove part and inspect. Fair enough I said but if theres no install damage will you replace the part, yes they said. The next phone call was a real kick in the b******s, they told me that they could not remove the block and plate because the 8mm screw in the electrical plug would not come undone and this invalidated the warranty. My bill is now £401 to replace a part that costs £127. Rip off merchants. Lesson learned and a warning to all is that the warranty you get with any parts that you replace yourself is worthless as they will find any exscuse to charge you. I could have purchased a replacment conductor plate and changed it myself for £127, yes i am feeling sick.

thanks for reading.

Sad reading but heard it before, must be the only trade in the world that can get away with it

It could be that they are trying to undo the 7mm nut for the electric connector with a 8 mm socket, and it is just spinning and not undoing.

I had a heart attack once on a job where i couldnt for the life of me tighten the nut for the electric cone, thinking i would have to do it all again, then i worked out i had left my 8mm socket on the ratchet and not the 7mm required.

Nice one that Ellsy but oh so easy to do when you are up against it as is missing the bl**ding obvious when fault finding:(

It wouldnt surprise me if they were trying to use a 8mm socket if that is what they told you over the phone, either that of just stiching you up!

Warranty joke..

Dont feel as if they would have covered the part if it had been replaced by MB.

I had an ABS pump failure at 65k. Car was picked up, ABS pump replaced, I got a replacement car in between etc and could not fault the service. I paid the bill and got a receipt that quite clearly stated 2 year Pan European Warranty on this repair.

5 months later same problem again, in Ireland. MB Ireland which is part of MB UK refused to cover it!! I had to get very nasty with them. They did everything in the book to try and get out from under it.

The argument that worked was that since they were refusing to cover it under warranty we said we would deal with it under common law instead. Of course this opened the door to all sorts of other costs being introduced, such as taking time off work, cost of bringing the car in and out of garage etc etc. It gives you a much bigger bill to argue over whereas warranty work is strictly limited to parts and labour costs. 50% of a much bigger bill is so much more so we hit them with everything right down to the cost of the phone calls.

Its good to know they are still at this sort of thing, nothing changes after all.
