Hi All,

Have just bought a '93 E320 cabriolet and amongst loads of other issues, the original Radio cassette unit has been replaced with a very un-original Sony unit. Can anybody please advise as to what MB radio/cd unit will fit/work with the 10 stack in the boot please?

Thanks in anticipation

Hello David and welcome to the MB forum

Why not buy and Audio 10 or 20 from Ebay

Check the VIN on the Russian site and you may find what stereo was originally fitted. It's probably a Becker changer and you'd probably need a Becker-made MB-badged stereo to run it. If it's not a Becker it may be made by Alpine

If there's no info there, pull out the existing stereo and see what wires are floating around behind it. I'd expect a 1993 car to have an ISO connector for power & speakers and there will be a seprarate multipin plug for the CD changer

I have a couple of Becker head units in my box of car stereo bits

I think you may be better off rethinking the stereo in your car.

In 1993 its more or less certain that a radio/cassete would have been installed.

If you buy a Mercedes unit from Ebay, you will get a unit which says MB on it, it wont be built by MB, and wont sound any better than a cheap to midrange modern unit.

An original Blaupunkt, if fitted would have looked something like this (this is a cd not a cassette):

I replaced the non-functioning cassette player in mine with this Sony unit:

I think it looks better than the black one which it was supplied with. Even though its a mid range unit, the 124 is a big car and I have an amplifier to fit to beef up the sound. I have also replaced all the speakers.

I honestly believe that original is not best if you want decent sounds in your car, if you want originality, I would try and find a cheap, non-working Mercedes unit from 1993, and listen to the engine instead.

If you search for posts by me, you will find a thread showing how I fitted new front speakers. - others have done it differently.

Thank you all for your assistance. Having trawled the Russian site I think the original unit may have been a Becker unit with the Alpine CD changer. I must admit that like Malcolm, I was thinkng of the Audio 10 as it should be a relatively easy swop and will not differ too much from the original unit. However, if I am not fortunate enough to get one before April, when I am back in the UK, then Nick I will give you a call to see if your 'box of bits' holds a suitable unit. Tony, thank you for attaching your photo's and advice. It's always helpful to have a visual representation.

Regards and best wishes

Sony Radio Required

I own a 1995 E320 Coupe W124 chassis.

It was fitted as an upgrade when purchased by its 1st owner from a Mercedes main dealer with a Sony XR-U401RDS FM/MW/LW Radio cassette player with a 10 stack Sony CDX 65 CD player in the boot.

It may well be this is the unit you seek.

Earlier radio models XR-400RDS/U300RDS/U301RDS work with this Sony CD player if this is what you have in the boot of your car.

Hope this helps
