I found a 10-inch or so crack in the outer glass of my windscreen today- grrr! I don't think it's vandalism, unless someone leant on the glass, but there's no other marks on the car. It starts right from the bottom left (passenger) side corner and goes up under the tax disc etc.
I know it's an after-market windscreen the previous ownder had fitted a couple of years ago so I dunno if that could affect quality.

Anyway, my Q is: this is my first damaged windscreen ever since driving- do most insurers cover replacement? I only have TPFT and a bit unsure if it's covered.

Anyone know how much a new screen from a dealer is?

Regards whether you have windscreen cover or not, you will have to read your policy document, but I think it normally comes with comprehensive only.

A windscreen specialist should be able to supply & fit a new one, but it will be quiet expensive, because of the upper tint and the fact that it has to be bonded in.

Hi Chazchuzzlewitt

I have yet to buy car insurance which EXCLUDES the replacement of windscreens or door windows. Windscreen damage is quite common which is why it is included in insurance policies.

I agree with pascal that you will have to study your policy but I would be very surprised if it didn't accommodate replacement glass panels.

If you had to replace glass panels without insurance you should expect a bill in excess of £300.

The last time I had a glass panel replaced it was because thieves broke in to steal what they thought was a wallet containing credit cards and/or money. They must have had a close look inside the car to spot the wallet because it was tucked inside a door pocket. All they got was a nice dial-type tyre pressure gauge in a fabric wallet, value £30. I expect they were disappointed. GOOD!

However, the damage they did was over £300 (window glas replacement) and I had to suffer the inconvenience of being without the car whilst the glass was replaced. Very annoying. I had to pay an insurance excess which I think was £50.

Without 'glass replacement' insurance I would have faced a really hefty bill.

REGARDS Phil

My windscreen was replaced early last year. THE MB dealer gave the job to a specialist windscreen installer, they don't do windscreen replacement in some dealerships. Genuine MB screens did not seem so expensive and the top tint is nice/essential.
