Replacing 124 Steering Wheel

My old wheel's leather cover is falling apart so I've bought a new wheel. New wheel comes without the airbag but is otherwise an exact replacement for the old one. So I need to take the whole wheel and airbag off, then put the new wheel on with the old airbag on it. Is this something that I can do for myself given that I'm not a car mechanic? I'm happy to get a garage to do it but doing that on a workday would be hard.

Any suggestions welcome...

Thanks a lot

You need to be careful removing the airbag, it will require a torx bit to remove it, the bolts can be accessed from behind the steering wheel.

Also, most cars have special procedures when dealing with the airbag to prevent unintended detonation of the charge, not sure what that is on a W124.

The bolt holding the steering wheel to the steering shaft is VERY tight and will require considerable effort to remove it, on mine it was a hexagon key and needed a breaker bar and two adults, one to hold the wheel and one to swing on the bar.

All in all, I would recommend you go to a merc specialist for this one.

Thanks very much Richard. That's very helpful. My local Merc people said it would only take 30 mins... better be nice to my new boss then and get some time off one morning.

Cheers
