How difficult is it to change an EGR valve on an ML-270CDI ? The wifes car has been having trouble over the last week and I had a look at the MAF & EGR valve at the weekend. THE EGR was full of gunge and I cleaned it as best I could, the engine seemed to be back to normal, however when I drove it the next day it was playing tricks again and wouldn't rev. Do I need to take off manifolds etc....

Hi you profile doesn't show where you are in the UK
The EGR can be removed with out disturbing the inlet manifold
I cleaned mine at 150,000 miles but it never made much difference see pics
If you disconnect the thin rubber pipe that goes to the EGR then the engine wont rev so as to simulate your problem, you can trace the pipe back to the transducers and check for any brakes etc. the third pic shows the system of pipes that goes to the two transducers
There may be other solutions to your problem
I think that you can sort this with out going to MB

Many thanks. I'm up in not so sunny Aberdeen.

As I said I spent the weekend trying to solve the problem (not revving above 2,500rpm) and did my best to clean the EGR & MAF. It all worked well when I finished, but when it went back to having the problem again over night I was convinced that I would have to change the EGR. Despite trying to run the car with the MAF disconnected the engine ran just the same which I thought indicated that the MAF wasn't the cause of the problem. When I went to the dealers they didn't have an EGR, but did have a MAF, and as it's only half the price I gave it a whirl - When I tried it last night It seemed great, we will just need to keep an eye on it for a few days - fingers crossed.

Thats great

I thought that I had a problem with my EGR valve which had done a lot of miles so I devised a way to monitering its opperation as I drive along, but I found that it was functioning correctly that's why I thought that yours would be OK
I carry a MAF on the motor just to rule it out if I have a problem

Seems to be working properly again since the MAF and Air filter were changed.

Many thanks for the help.
