through repitatively raising and lowering the soft top i have managed to perish the seal that joins the roof cover to the back of the car. not sure exactly how it is attached, i know that the replacement seal is cheap, but is this a complete pain in the arse to remove and replace?

Your Mercedes
R107, S211, R170, C219
you need broad arms

The old one rips out easily enough. to put the new one in, you need a sturdy plastic spatula kind of thing, lots of gritted teeth and about 2hours. Start from the middle where the cutout for the locating pin is, and work out. You might try anchoring the ends to the extremities of the cabrio top as well, or you might end up with overshoot.
