I think I have just acquired a complete differential housing from a breakers to replace whining diffs on my c240 (202). My plan is to disconnect the existing diffs at the prop and wheel drive shafts, drop the diffs and install the replacement unit. I have a friend with a pit so as to allow me to get underneath the car. Has anyone else got any experience on doing this job, if so is this the right way to go about replacing the diffs and can you give any further advice or should I adopt some other method apart from paying a fortune to a Mercedes dealer?

Hi,

The process you describe is just about it. Check over the new diff especially the bushes and replace any suspects. check the oil after everthings back together and level. And if it whines again give it a clip round the ear'ole and give it some sawdust to eat. :p :p

If the repalcement has oil stains on it, I would recommend replacing the oil seals for the propshaft and two drive shafts. As well as cleaning/replacing the diff breather.
If would be a pain to the trouble of replacing the diff, then have an oil leak due to a blocked breather.
