Replacing the timing chain on my W210 E230 (111 engine)- How do I fit the master link?
The engine if fully stripped so I have easy access to the chain. The new chain came with a new masterlink. Any advice would be greatly apreciated :D

Timing Chain

Can't really help on the master-link, but be very careful that you follow the correct procedure for setting the tensioner as any mistakes here will cost you dearly. Sorry if you know this already, but I wouldn't like you to follow the fate of many who have wrecked their engine by mistakes here. If you need any info, there is plenty on this board about cam-shafts and chain tensioners.

Again, apologies if you are already aware.......

Regards,

Ernie

Thanks for the warnings, will take care - replacing the tensioner with a new one as well. Thanks for the info Malcolm, indeed a special tool needed, 602 589 00 39 00, with inserts 112 589 09 63 00 according to your info, don't even want to guess what the dealers would charge me for that lot. Guess what I'll do is take the new chain to one of the engine rebuilding shops here and see if they will crimp/rivet the link for me into the new chain. Then refit it like that since the engine is stripped down anyway.;

If you go to a bearing supplier they will be able to sell you a joining link kit which is locked with tiny circlips. This will get you over the problem of the rivetted link, and IMO is just as good.

Agreed Uncle, and they supply this link when you replace the chain by pulling through on the end of the old one

cool :cool:, I'll remmeber that in future. Since the engine is stripped I wont need to go the thread through and then link route. The guys at the engineering shop was kind enough to rivet the link for me this morning, free of charge, so tonight the fun of futher reasembly begins. Anybody perhaps know how I can replace the oil idle valve, I got a new one, looks like it might need to be pressed in, I'd rather skip replacing the old one then damaging anything by replacing?

Do you mean pressure relief valve, or the oil non return on the filter housing

I would not bother in changing it if there is a risk, but I will look later in the day
