Last night my 01 C-Class decided not to start and gave the error message :

Restraint System Visit Workshop SRS

The car manual as we all know isnt the best so all it says about this message is that its a category 1 problem.

It looks like it may be the battery.

Has anyone experienced this before >>

Cheers,

Paul

Yes.

I had this error come up a number of times as well as BAS errors and low brake fluid errors. Your diagnosis is correct, it was the battery failing. Once a new battery was installed, there were no more errors. I think that the sensor systems in the modern cars need a certain voltage to work properly. Once the battery drops below this then they give an error.

The SRS system is for all of the air bags, and belt tentioners in the car. I do not think it is a battery fault, very simple to check. first thing in the morning before the car has been started, turn the headlamps on, and measure the voltage, it should not be under 12 volt.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Ive just did the light test as Television suggested (though I dont have a voltage meter) and there are no lights at all.....plus the occassional clicking noise from the engine, and the restraint System error message has gone.

So its looking like a dud battery.....fingers crossed

Is it the original battery? If it is, it would be about due for replacement. I would be wary of changing the battery myself though, as the rear SAM module is a bit fragile in the early W203 C class and has been known to blow when reconnecting batteries.

My dealer fitted the battery for free when I replaced mine. If your car wont start, do you have full MBSH? If so it may be possible to get mobilolife out for them to change it.
