Not sure whether this is possible or sensible but I would like to retrofit an integrated phone into my 2001 S320, using the steering wheel and comand controls.
Any one know whether this is practical and more important financially viable. As an alternative is it possible to utilise the integrated contols with a bluetooth phone?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I considered this for my C class using a website which I will post up when I remember it's name:confused: . The parts from MB were fairly expensive and the task semmed quite onerous, I opted for a Dabendorf FWD audio 3000 unit which came with a harness which enables connection to the steering wheel controls. It only allows answer and hang up facilities but the phone kit also has voice activated dialling (30numbers) and routes sound through the car speakers so the volume is operable also from steering wheel. There is also a Bluetooth module available for it. Although the full MB version is preferable, this was an inexpensive option and fairly easy to fit.

Hi, like you I wanted to retro fit a phone to my R171. Contacted MB and they said it's not advisable, they have done it but the parts alone were £2k, new harness and complete centre consol. My mate there said it took them 1 1/2 days to fit it. There is a work sheet for retro fitting but not for the faint hearted, hope it helps.

On a car of that age, your most cost effective route would be a third party solution as the MB stuff will be expensive.

On the newer MOST based cars you can have the FSE2 phone kit added very easily. This is intended for cars that dont have the phone pre-wire and connects in to the system at the expense of the IPOD connection.

Richard is a friend of mine and what he doesnt know about Mercedes electronics, isnt worth knowing. He once stripped down his SL55 to see how it was put together.

I think Richard is probably credited with having done the first COMAND retrofit many years ago after having walked into his local dealer and asked if they could do it, they said no it cant be done. He said, can you order me these bits and produced a list. He then went on to retro fit linguatronic and TV to his then CLK55 (W208 ) again after being told it couldnt be done. Interestingly linguatronic was never a factory option on the W208!
