rev counter

hi, i own a 310 sprinter,i have put a set of 312 clocks in and i would like to get the rev counter working, i:ve been told its a simple wire from the alternator to the clocks..so many coloured wires... can anyone put me right,or point me in the right direction please???? thanx...
