Good day to all illustrious merc owners!
Finally got my central locking sorted out, it was a leak on one of the doors causing the pump to burn out, central locking now working fine, thanks to all for advice. Now have a new problem! Reverse gear is very sluggish. Seems to go straight into reverse when left over night, (possibly oil is cold)! But after a few miles a bit hit and miss. Have been told of common problem of a delay mechanism on reverse. Put in reverse, nothing happens, rev it a bit, then it judders a bit into reverse. The oil does not look good, possibly water in the box, as I do not garage the car. As far as I have owned the car the gearbox oil has not been changed. I own a r129 300sl 24 v with a lovely sounding engine. Has anyone expierienced this problem?

Not good news, looks like the KS clutch or gaskit on large intermedate plate damaged and that is gearbox out, to fix. I would use a gearbox specialist to do the job. Its the 722.5 box

Hi,

If you are looking for a rebuild, the cheapest place about seems to be George Fraser. I'm saving up to get my box done (722.501). Mine is sluggish in reverse, but when its cold, not hot.
