are reverse lights intended to light up the road behind so you can see where you're going to or ..... more so that others can see that you're about to reverse? I can't say that I've ever noticed anything behind me being lit up by the reverse lights on any car I've ever had.

+1 for LED, I changed the incandescents in my S204 for projector style 16W LED, much better, just make sure they're canbus compatible.

Have been through this hoolahoop with CLK, 3 sets of LEDs.
This compatible that compatible nothing worked.
The last LED ones I fitted to 190B and are no brighter than originals.
If you want to preserve your sanity don't bother.

My W205 220d C class estate has the worst reversing lights of any car I've ever owned. Anybody know how to improve them.

Trust me, my 07 E350 isn't any better.

are reverse lights intended to light up the road behind so you can see where you're going

I believe they (reversing lights) are suppose to illuminate apart of the road/area behind the vehicle so you can see where you are reversing at night. They serve the dual purpose of letting others know that you are about to back into them ...

Most vehicles I have had/driven did have reversing lights that lit the roadway/area behind me - not a lot of it BUT enough to know where the road was :)

Generally they are intended to inform others you are reversing, they are intended to not be too bright so as not to be mistaken for headlights (ie in the dark). Common sense.

That said on some cars with reversing cameras they do illuminate down on the road moreso to facilitate the on screen reverse display. This is certainly great in my W251
