Bought an e240 1998 76k about 6 weeks ago.

Over last 2-3 weeks when you put your foot down, the revs increase but it doesnt change gear until you release your foot off accelerator... also, when stop on a steep hill it will not hold unless you apply brake - starts rolling back!

just had gearbox fluid checked - level etc is fine...

Anyone any ideas? - man said to just run it til it breaks???? as needs seals replacing - anyone any idea how much this will cost?

Anyone you can recommend in west yorkshire area?

thanks

does it sound like the seals will have worn on 76k - i know the mileage isnt high and that can be a problem - just the auto specialist i took it to, well lets say i wouldnt be suprised if he was trying it on....

Thanks for the tip - will give merccare a call....

No control cable on this model, get the faults read, could be air mass making it hang the gears or a box fault.

This is what all autos do ... is it not????

However if you hold the revs at just under 2000 revs it should change up all by itself. If it fails to do that then you do have a problem

ummmmm....

Its fine changing up gears if you do it gradually. If your on the motorway and want to quickly accelerate - thats when the revvs go crazy and it doesnt shift up until you ease up....I m not very technically minded so I hope that makes sense?
does anyone think it could be gearbox seals?

does it feel flat performance wise?? air masses dont always log faults.

nope... apart from not shifting up it runs really well.... no problems at all driving in towns/motorways, until you want really quick acceleration and then it just doesnt happen - it revs, then ease off to let it catch a gear and repeat....

from today he said the seals are on their way out - if this is the case i need a quote and maybe get it fixed - if its just the way it drives then thats fine....

you cant go wrong with a oil+fillter service for the box its not exspensive but tends to be overlooked on older cars

anyone got any more thoughts?

Do you have a friendly garage who you can borrow an air mass from? as it sound like it esp as its not slipping. the gear changes are affected due to the engine not developing enough torque when req. in normal driving its not noticable.

I too have just bought an E240 Avantgarde - had much the same problem on the drive home. After changing the MAF sensor its like driving a different car - the car did however come out of limp mode when the ignition was turned on and off.
