HI,

I'm about to upgrade the exhaust on my 2012 C200 CDI to the C63 quad tip style. As I was under the car figuring out how to remove the diffuser, I noticed there is no heat shield material where the right hand side silencer would go.

Would the shield from one of the w204 models with left and right exhausts fit (C350 / C63)? Does anyone know the part number if it does?

How much of the exhaust are you replacing?
You do realise the diameter of a C63 exhaust is larger than that on a C200D?
Are you using genuine C63 parts?

The heatshield on both sides is in 2 pieces. The Part #s for the right hand side muffler are

Inside heat shield A 20 468 284 71
Outer heat shield A 20 468 001 22
They are around £20+ each.
Spring clamp heatshield to top of rear bumper A 00 099 114 70

The same heatshields are fitted to both the 350 and 63

I couldn't say for certain if they will fit your car, but I'd guess they will.
This may help with C63 exhaust part numbers if you need anything else.

Well, my initial plan was to have an exhaust shop build up the right side of the exhaust system, join it to the factory one and add the quad tips. But it was pointed out to me that under the cosmetic cover there are 2 pipes coming out of the muffler, so it looks like I'll have to change both sides to fit the aftermarket tips.

I'll get a pair of C350 mufflers if I can find any. E class (w212) ones are plentiful, but I don't know if they'll fit in the recess. I'm trying to use genuine Mercedes parts where possible so it will look right (except for the tips, no easy way to do that).
I do have a genuine C63 diffuser to accommodate the larger diameter exhaust.

Thanks for the part numbers, at those prices it makes sense to go straight to the local dealer. Although, from the diagram in the link provided I think the outer shield should be A 20 468 002 22.

You are correct.
Apologies I copied the wrong Part #.

In case anyone else wants to do this, the heatshields (A 20 468 284 71 and A 20 468 002 22) fit fine on a w204 C200 - they fasten down solidly and I can't hear any rattling while driving. I would guess they'd probably fit just as well on a C220 or C250.

One exhaust shop told me its fine to leave out the heatshields, but after seeing the cavity behind the undertray I'm glad I fitted them - I'm fairly certain the inside of the quarter panel would quickly get covered in road filth otherwise.

Thank you for this post as I am doing the same now and this was very helpful. Is there anything else I need to buy to install the heat shields? Any fasteners worth mentioning? Sorry,
I have not been under the car just yet to check out in detail.

You will need 2 or 3 nuts and washers, if I remeber correctly they were M6, to fit the studs holding the top of the heatshields. I think one didn't line up perfectly but that was probably something I did as it looked like it should have. Still rock solid as it is. It can be a bit fiddly - I think it matters which part goes in first but I can't remember how I did it.

The rest of the fasteners should already be on the car, holding the plastic cover in place. I suggest soaking everything in WD-40 or equivalent overnight before trying to undo anything.
You will also need to remove the rear wheel to remove the plastic cover and to fit the outer heatshield, as there are fasteners going through the liner. The water drain hose from near the fuel filler cap may get a bit in the way too, but if you fiddle about with it for a bit everything will fall in place.

You can get the fasteners from the dealer, but most can be replaced with standard metric ones from your local hardware store for a fraction of the price. I ended up getting everything in stainless as the price difference was insignificant.

If you're not going to straight pipe it, you'll also need the right hand silencer hanging bracket - A204 490 09 37. Cheapest I found was on lllparts.co.uk - a bit less than the dealer quoted me but still pricey. You'll need an additional M8x16 bolt to fit it apart from the fastners that should already be on the car (the hole it fits into should be protected with a plastic plug).

And while on the subject of fasteners - if you need to drill out rivets to change the diffuser, M4x12 bolts with the appropriate nuts and washers are a good replacement.

Wow, I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to provide all these details. I really appreciate it. I felt like you that while it might not be necessary, why not do it right as intended from the factory if I’m going to mod the bumper, diffuser and install a new exhaust rear section. I just ordered the Fox exhaust system with quad tips after all the research so I’m excited to attack this project once all the parts arrive. Thanks again for making it easier for the next person and sharing your experience.

Well, it took a fair bit of time and effort figuring it out, so I'm glad that what I learned can be of benefit to others.

Probably very wise of you to go for a complete aftermarket exhaust system. I tried to keep everything original on mine, and while it may have been a little bit cheaper I'm not sure it was worth the extra time and effort to make it happen. Especially since I had to go for aftermarket quad tips in the end anyway (original tips are part of a substantial section of the C63 exhaust system!)

I appreciate it big time and I can imagine as you sound like you’re somewhat a perfectionist too. I searched for a bit before I settled on the Fox system, but it only from axle back and not a full system. It sounds almost stock from what I read and heard, but it ls what I was seeking. I almost ordered the Zen system but the Rage would be too loud and boy racer for my age. Being in Japan the logistics is deal breaker and the folks in Europe get the cool stuff. I just ordered the extra deep 10mm socket from what I read. At least I probably can’t lose this one. LOL. I’ll try to post up later when I’m done. Thanks again.

I am a bit, which is why I wish I had the tools and skills to do the fabrication and welding too. It's not bad, but not quite perfect - but at least I can't see it unless I crawl under the car.

You don't need any special tools to fit the heatshields, silencer hanger and diffuser, I certainly didn't have any. Keep in mind I've never done anything like this before - if you've worked on cars before you'll find it quite easy (except for rusty fasteners).

In the interest of avoiding damage to your bumper, here are a couple of videos I found useful to change my diffuser. Don't be put off by the rivets - a sharp 4mm drill bit makes light work of them. With a steady hand you won't damage anything either.

Yesterday I picked up my new AMG bumper and side skirts I bought from a local online auction. I got very luck to find the same color as the car and for less than $200 USD shipped for both items. My OEM diffuser, brackets and shields are going to take a bit coming from the mother land of Germany. Thanks again for all your help and tips, and the videos. It looks too easy and I'm sure it is other than the misc screws I'll need. You're my hero for helping me get a good start and idea with tips to make the job so much easier. I appreciate you UK folks because I can't read or write Japanese to see what the local enthusiasts do. Thank you again!

W204benz and AMGeed,

I wanted to come back here to thank you for the info again. I can’t believe that it took me so long to finally get around to removing the preface lift bumper to install the recommended right side heat shields and AMG quad tip bumper and diffuser with Fox exhaust. Everything worked perfectly and I appreciate this information. My car is a 2011 C200 CGI S204 Estate Wagon. Thank you again.
