I've just graduated and have entered the world of full-time work, and believe it is time to own my first Mercedes. Initially I'm looking to buy a second hand C-Class for around the £6k to £8k mark, and would appreciate any advice on what to buy or what to be aware of when choosing/buying.

I'm not after a beast of a car - but something with sufficient acceleration at 60/70mph is a definite (perhaps all C-class mercs satisfy this, I've never driven one).

Any insight/advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi adz,

You might think of going for a small sized engine, to keep the costs down. I have a C240 which is a 2.6l V6 and it just drinks petrol like there's no tomorrow compared to my dad's 2nd car (1.2l car) and my sisters 1.8l diesel. Am guessing you won't save much compared to a c180 or c200, i dont really know to be honest :)

Fuel consumption is something which I didn't think about when buying my car, thou I do now which I had bought the c320

Welcome to the forum Adz.

You sound as though you have got your head screwed on and these forums are a great place for benefitting from combined experience.

I am sorry I am unable to offer any specific advice as I have no experience of the C Class and I hope you get a better response from others soon.

If not could I suggest you try the MBClub forum (find via google).

ANY C class will be fast about the 60/70 mark. This is where mercedes are normally fast and then then engine size just tells you how fast.

Go and drive one , or a few , make a choice....

To aDz,
Be careful to avoid a C class 180 round about 'M' reg 'cos the alternator and battery are not big enough to keep up with the demand from the security system - my friend has to disconnect his battery when he wants to leave the car parked any longer than for a couple of days. This is a design fault which was put right later on when the C class went 'all electric' ie. necesary to re-programme everything (including the sun roof) when the battery is disconnected! This why the secondhand prices of certain C class cars appear so attractive. Alternatively, buy one and invest in a dash top solar panel for about forty notes - these work quite effectively, I'm told.
Cheers, Mike.
