I see from recent visit to my local MB stealer that they are promoting the road angel speed camera detector, is there anybody on the forum using one of these and if so are they any good? Or an alternative make.

I have/had an older road angel which was useful as an aide memoir. I use the speed limiter more and the only time North Wales Police sent me a picture of my car it wasn't in the Road Angel database...

Looking
I have one - they require updating every now and again online with new camera locations - though it only takes 30s usually. Worked OK so far!

The Origin B2 is meant to be good as an alternative.

I've just been looking at the Origin B2 on Halfords website, I see some the detectors are now wireless.

I've just got a Talex Lite. Its the cheapest one out there (£60ish quid on ebay), but does the job is good quality and very neatly and discreetly packaged.
I've had road angels in the past and the talex is as good and smaller.
I just bought a road pilot microgo from halfords at the offer price of £99 but sent it back - poor quality screen, poorly designed, generally not nearly as good as I'd expected.

Talex Lite highly recommended

I bouugh a Road Angel 7000 a few weeks ago and really like it - good battery life, great warnings for fixed AND temporary sites (that bit is a REAL eye opener....) and good navigation.

Now I've switched to the male voice even my wife like it.

Only hitch is that on rally overcast days it can drop the signal but I guess any system without an external antenna will suffer from that

I recommend it.

I would avoid the 6000 - it's a bit cheaper but the processor is slower

We've got the Road Angel 6000 with the Sat Nav and the speed camera detector. It really is very good and you can have the Sat Nav on at the same time as the speed cam detector or just have one of them on. The battery life if very good so you don't have to have wires dangling all over the place making the car look untidy ;)

Oops - didn't mean to be rude about the 6000 which always has good reviews.

I just bought the 7000 as it was the newest one and the processor is a bit faster.

Horses for courses - they're starting to discount the 6000 but not the 7000 yet.

Blobcat,
That picture of your car so kindly taken by the Bill has got me worried. I thought the vast majority of speed camerts took the picture from behind.....

Are front-firing cameras rare, or do I have to re-think my avoidance arrangements?

Forward facing camaras are the in thing now. Blobcat would make sure that the picture was taken on an up to date camara.

Oh it's okay I didn't interpret your post as rude :)

I don't think the 7000 was out when we bought ours last August but it looks very good :D

Hi there,

I think the 7000 only came out pretty late last year. I started looking in December and not all the the websites featured the 7000 at the time so I guess it was brand new.

I paid a bit more for it on the basis that I was going to keep it for many years and the extra £50 would average out at pennies per week.

That was June 2006, the Gatsos get the back of the vehicle, it is the man in the van that gets the front.
Have a look on ukspeedtraps.co.uk for lots of info on the different equipment used and how they work.

i bought a Snooper Saphire camera detector (w/o satnav). Also has the mobile sites on it. It's good, but i had difficulty re-charging, and they ended up sending me a mains charger, which works v well. Fits neatly into the little cubby hole that flips out to the left of the air-con controls.

i picked it because it's reliable, and there's no wires involved. Battery only last 3hrs tho, which is fine for me, but may not suit if you're doing a lot of long journies.

cheers]

I've been using one of these for the last few months. I have to say I'm impressed in this wee unit. It certainly gives you plenty of advance warning of possible speed trap area's and also fixed camera sights.

It gives verbal warnings  of speed check area's or fixed cameras; and also gives the speed limit for the section of road you are on. Cool.

You can turn the voice off if you want.

I located mine in under the spare wheel cover. Keeps it out of the way.

P.S. It's only £59.99 @ ALDI. ;-)

When you start the car it says. "Talex system active, fasten seat belts."

89 quid, thats much cheaper than the snooper, and sounds like it does more or less the same.

...and anyway, would be worth it just to get THAT message. Love it!
