Hi

Is there any major problems with toad/wind noise on the C Class and in particular the C270CDi ? I've just read an owners review that really slated the car for it. As I am about to but one I would be interested to get some feedback on this.

Thanks

I have a 2004 W203 C200K and quality of the road surface does make a big difference to noise level. Get a very smooth stretch and its soooooooo so very quiet, but on most UK roads - which are in bad condition - its fairly noisy - for a Mercedes. Its fitted with Continental tyres. And make/size of tyre does make a difference.
Then again I also have the sports pack with lower profile tyres and harder suspension, so that probably doesnt help.
However, its no worse than any other car I have been in. So its not BAD per se, they are otherwise very quiet cars.
Maybe Diesels are noiser - I dont know.
Wind noise is negligable until you hit silly speeds with the windows cracked open.

I would certainly not use it as a reason not to buy one. I would buy another for sure.

But to use your word - is it a MAJOR problem, and the answer is a resounding NO.

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I have a late 2004 C270CDi, but it's an estate.

Wind noise, which is my pet bugbear, is very low on mine - at 70ish on the motorway I can't hear any.

There is some "road roar", which is affected by the road surface. It's also noticeably quieter since I changed the original Bridgestone Turanza tyres for Michelin Primacy HP's - although I'm not sure if the Michelin's are noted as being quiet.

I would say a worse feature of the car is how hard the suspension is. Mine is an Avantgarde, which is lowered compared to Elegance but doesn't have the Sport suspension. It's on 16" wheels, so nothing dramatic there.
Perhaps the estate is different to the saloon to allow for load carrying, but it's almost painful on poor road surfaces.

However, on a smooth motorway at 70ish it wafts along effortlessly and with little noise - actually the faster it goes, the more settled it seems.

No problem with road noise in my C270 Elegance, once you are cruising it is as quiet as can be. Wind noise increases as speed increase but at normal motorway speeds is not an issue.

tyre noise

I have a 53 c200cdi , which came on contental conti sport, which I thought were noisey.A off record recommendation of local service manager, the next pair were mich pilote, which much improved matters, when the next pair were swapped the effect was even more noticable. same effect when I fitted a pair to sister in laws ford ka. interestingly she is totally uninterested in cars etc, but noticed the lower noise levels & rang me about how pleased she was.
