Time is running out to sign this so I've cut & pasted it in from another car website:

Rich

If you drive a car, please read -
Sarah Kennedy was talking about this proposed car tax scheme on Radio 2. Apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to the 'Pay As You Go' road tax.

The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only 250,000 people had signed it and 750,000 signatures are required for the goverment to at least take any notice.

Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, just house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition.

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.

On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill.

If you are concerned about this Orwellian plan and want to stop the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible. Sign up if you value your freedom and democratic rights -

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Scrap the planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy.

I think all this is a big con. It looks plausible, but in fact you could set up one of those petitions about anything if you wanted. I don't believe it.

Buying a tracking device then having to pay to use it? Come on.

By the way, did you know that the word gullible has been removed from the Oxford English Dictionary?

thanks Lance for your insightful comments.

It now has "conned" 1,027,865 people.

Feel free to pay my "mileage tax" for me when the leftie spin-over-substance brigade bring it in.

Petition for 'pay-as-you drive' but also speed cameras

It's not a con. It has featured in the Telegraph, Mail and Sun newspapers this month (today in the Mail and Sun). There's also a petition started up about speed cameras. Maybe we should all register our views - it runs until June

I signed on the road pricing petition earlier and then saw it mentioned on the 10-o-clock news so I have just told my dad to do it too.

As far as speed cameras are concerned I am a high mileage commercial driver and also a bit enthusiastic at times but seem to have kept a cleanish licence for the last decade. I believe that if you are getting caught regularly you are probably not alert enough to drive at illegal speeds, maybe a controversial point of view.

I too saw it on the 10 o'clock news, but I'm more inclined to sign the petition asking for the national anthem to be replaced by Spandau Ballet's 'Gold'.

2700 people have already! :)

This has been on the news over the last couple of days. The government, bless 'em, have said openly that they will pay no attention to it. They have said openly that they will go ahead with the plan (they claim over the next ten years) irrespective of public opinion, even if there were 10 million entries on the petition.

As I said before, this will make no difference. Tony thinks he is untouchable. There will be elections over the next decade and the only way to stop this plan is to get rid of this dictatorship as soon as possible. When Tony leaves his policies will continue so the only solution is to remove the party.

Sorry this is political but I have just been told that thanks to Tony's fat friend how sh"gs securities on his desk we are going to get 40 houses built in the field opposite my front door (you may have seen the pictures I posted on one of the other threads). Another legacy of the current government. An AONB turned into a council esate.

Will the last one on please turn out the lights.....:( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Send me a PM when you've been forced to buy your tracking device then... The Nationwide congestion charging is one thing, but I'm referring to having to buy these so called tracking devices then paying to use them. That's the far fetched bit, and the bit that the petition sensationalises so that people sign it.

We've heard the sob story about the non-working mother who was too lazy to walk her kids to school before. Several times, I think.

This is supposed to be the "General Mercedes-Benz Related Discussion" forum and I don't think political rants (calling our elected government "this dictatorship" is certainly ranting in my book) are related to the M-B marque at all. Isn't there some better place for this kind of topic?

It does my head in when people go on "This isn't a real democracy" or "we live in a dictatorship" etc etc.

No we don't!. If you don't like what a party is doing. Vote them out!

If there's no one else to vote for, that isn't the doing of the 'dictatorship' in power. Get a grip!

If this country is so bad, then don't live here. Simple.
Everyone where I work hates it. Most just whinge and whine, I handed my notice in.

I don't think I'll be in this country in 5 years' time.

The message is simple: IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Blimey! We're going to have to have a politics/strongly held views/w210 rust free forum! :p
