I'm looking for a roof stand for my 2001 SL500 Silver Arrow. Ones seen so far look cheap and flimsy. Any decent suppliers?

Not That I have found :( most stand wont take the panoramic roof either :(

The best solution is to build it a little shrine in the garage :D I got an old rug and stuck it to the wall and floor in an L shape. Then I put some eyes into the wall either side then I tied the roof to them then covered it up still have the problem of getting the bugger on and off the car though :(

Well there's also the lift that's fixed to the garage ceiling. One man job, and its stored up there also.

I bought a specially made bag, that holds the roof and hangs neatly on the garage wall, excellent.

These solutions will work for the old hardtops, But the Silver arrow has a glass panoramic roof. They are rather heavy (it took three people to get mine off) and they need extra support.

On the topic of hanging the roof up on the hoist, I have heard that they can get bent out of shape if you are not careful. :)

Roof Stand....

Hi, What conclusion did you come to ?... I'm now in the market for some sort of storage.. for a panoramic roof.. I'm considering looking at the Toplift stand as per
http://www.toplift.se/en/contact.php...

cheapskate that I am...

I made my own with a fancy 12v winch from machine mart, £104, which will lift the QE2 judging by the spec. It will pull 1600 lbs, and as the 107 roof is about 50 kilos, no prob. I also customised a Paddy Hopkirk commercial ladder rack to make the cradle, £49.99. After that it was all hooks, eyes, pulleys, joists and ladders. More Heath-Robinson than the toplift, but just as effective. I also have two webbing straps for safety's sake, slung throught the roof and the cradle in such a way that if the main cable fails, they will take the strain and save the day. And it only takes twice as long to do as having the missus give me a hand. The quickest way is person lift off the car, and then hook up the cradle and hoist it skyward.
The winch is bound to be strong enough for the panoramic roof as well.

I knew I'd seen this before. It's on the German Sternzeit 107 site, which is very good in itself. The final pictures tell the whole story and it has the details of the firm who make it.

Is it just me but all of these stands appear only to offer 2 point contacts on the lower edge of the hardtop rear window glass? This seems alot of weight to be carried and I am a little concerned about the stress induced at these points.

I am thinking about making my own but using a contoured foam bottom to support the hardtop along the total edge that will be in contact, surely this would be a better design?

I agree

It would be better to spread the load evenly, but I think the commercial types rely on universal usability, hence their 2 point support. Not too bad on the 107, as it has a sturdy metal frame. Just for info, the weight of the roof is carried mainly in the angle of the rear quarterlight and top of the roof on my winch thing. This needed a lot of tuning with the pick up point to ensure horizontal hanging. I have a two point pick up to the back bottom edge of the roof as well , just for peace of mind. The manual says take it along to your local MB, who will store your hard top in summer and your soft top in winter. I'm sure they will,at a price.

Daylight robbery?

Mr. Carrymaster emailed me back with the postage cost fo the roof cover to Ireland.

Bearing in mind that it's £10 P&P throughout the UK.

Recorded delivery to Dublin: 82 Euro (£56.40). :-:)mad:

Where do they get their figuires from .

Could get return flight, taxi to collect item, & a few pints in the airport lounge for 82 Euro.

After I spent a long time drilling and rawpluging the garage wall to mount some carpet etc I realised that the only contact points my hardtop makes with the wall is the two rubber locating pins by the quarter lights!! To secure the top to the wall you simply need to screw eyes mounted high up the wall level with the leading edge of the hardtop front locating lugs - stick a small bilet through the lug and the eye and job done! Bottom edge of hartop on foam of course.

try this chap in berlin

He has designed a belting hoist for 107s. There are some pictures of it on the Sternzeit 107 site, but I'm not sure of the etiquette in posting op's pix and products. He speaks excellent english by the way. I think the cost comes in way under toplift's exorbitant price for an electric hoist. I wish I'd seen it before I went and built mine.

the hardtop stand

photo is the same as on the 107 Sternzeit site, so it's probably the same chap. He said he had sold a few to UK buyers on e-bay. Worth negotiating a club discount, I'd say.
