I have a 1990 R129 300SL. On particularly bumpy roads (Richmond Mortlake Kew etc) the roll over bar is making an awful lot of leathery creaking noises - quite loud and anoying. It doesn't happen when it is in the raised position. I don't really want to drive with it up. I've tried conditioning the leather, and lowering the ocasional seats but to no avail. Has anyone any ideas about how to silence it?

It may be better with what ever you have put on there, taken off. These are not covered in leather, its artificial look alike. The wrong conditioning can make the surface sticky, thus making the noise. Do check the surrounding area's when its down that there is clearance, all the way round.

Try a leather conditioner containing silicone (something like Armour-all) which will leave the leather more slipery. Appled to both sides, this should allow rubbing surfaces to move silently.

Paul, the roll bars are not leather, if you apply leather cleaner it make the surface sticky.
