Sprinter W906 2017 Panel van with 2.1 om651 Diesel engine.
Hi
I have a 2017 Sprinter W906 with an om651 2143cm3 diesel engine. On a cold start the van can be a little stuttery on pull off but is otherwise fine. It accelerates well and will rev over 3000 rpm easily.
After a couple of minutes the temp rises above 60C on the display and then the engine won't rev above 3000 rpm. The van drives beautifully otherwise and sounds fine.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.

You gotta get them codes read man.
I might think the turbo actuator is throwing a slight iffy, but the Star might think different like.
Best guess costs a packet, mind so does diagnostics. Could be cheaper though, dude.

as o p said codes read , But might be something a decent reader of any type might pick withoutout going to dealer might be worth finding somewhere local who would stick a reader on even it was £ 40 if it’s quick and straight forward reading some tend to say give us a £10 could be worth a try .

Great advice I got one for multi car few yrs back , it has saved the whole family resolve many many faults even in some cases the faults were cleared and never came back. But generally it usually points you in right direction.

If the mileage is high, it could point to the sensor on the position of the crankshaft.

Read codes go from there, even then u can get sent down a lengthy path of makers deliberate attempts to confuse you or anyone not dealing with this on daily basis, ask how I know,! But at least it will likely rule out a lot of other possibilities/dramas.

Some crank sensors go faulty but won't stop a running engine, will just not allow a restart some will function cold and not when warm . Most won't power the fuel supply if an in limit cranking speed is not seen by the ecm.
I have had this plenty times on machinery with lo batts, a sniff in inlet manifold gets cranking speed up and often away the motor goes.

I've now used iCar reader and got error code P0299 Turbocharger/Supercharger A underboost condition.
So to help me diagnose the issue, how does this A underboost relate to the engine temp? Why do I get boost (rev higher than 3,000 rpm) when 'cold' engine, but restricted to 3,000 rpm once warmer engine. Is there anything that this leads to to narrow down my search for a probable leak? I should have time on Monday to take the air filter box off and take a look but any ideas would be helpful.
Thank you :)

This is about best I can find. Just checking you have checked air filters ok ,
What repairs can fix the P0299 code?
  1. Turbo or supercharger replacement.
  2. Repairing of the intake system.
  3. EGR replacement.
  4. Boost pressure sensor replacement.
  5. Low engine oil pressure repair.

Just to add thinking back I had landrover with similar problems I took off all air intake pipes and the m a f sensor was in a section I clipped out and cleaned with electrical cleaner which helped but when replaced with new one and faults cleared it solved it. So worth checking my air pipes in the Land Rover were all bunged up and oily so used oven degreaser in a large basin to wash them out and dried well or the gunge would have destroy new sensor in the air ways.

I've checked and cleaned MAF Sensor using dedicated cleaner. Checked air intake filter and visually looked OK. Service timer on Van itself indicates 7100 until next service. I've only just got the van at a significant discount due to this issue so even if I end up replacing the turbo I'll still be OK from ££ point of view.
Something I did notice is the oil level is high, I need to bleed some off but was intending on doing a Service B once the turbo issue was identified. I didn't want to do it before hand incase I needed to bleed the oil during the fix. I'm thinking now it would be time well spent doing that service now so I know where I stand.
Thanks for the ideas.

Oil level high? Is there any fuel in it?

Dipstick just looks like oil, same consistency all the way along it. Is there any particular way of seeing if fuel is in the oil?
