I'm going to pull the engine out if the CL soon, I want to bullet proof it as I think ill be supercharging it at some point this year. I really, really do love this car now, it just does everything you want it to do, its a great cruiser, but its also very agile and responsive when you want to play. It feels so much smaller and lighter when you're playing.Anyway, while its off the road I was thinking of getting an E320 CDI, I can't believe you can get one for under 4k. The thing is I know nothing about them, what speck options were available, what to avoid and what to look out for. I'm sure some of you are very knowledgeable about these cars. I know nothing about them at all out than they look extremely good value for money. Ideally id like to spend less than 4k, as it will be used purely for nipping about in. Popping the shops, school run, chucking the golf clubs in etc. The lambo has been sold and its too much hassle taking the 912 out, plus you can't get golf clubs in it!

So really what im looking for is the must have options and what to look out for.

Thank you in advance.

John

Look for a petrol after 06 and you should get a pretty solid car for that price,
After 06 is when they dropped the SBC braking which although brilliant the pumps were an maintenance item that often got overlooked

The S211 estate would be my choice the OM642 (V6 diesel) circa 2007-09 run out cars are the best and very well sorted just make sure the oil cooler seals aren’t leaking and you will have a very good car in 280cdi or 320cdi guise that will lose very little value and there are still some very low mileage ones about

Sound like you like a bit of performance so consider an E500. Little runs you suggest aren't good for diesels and the 500s go well and are pretty bullet proof (golf clubs fit easily as well). The electrical bits are the problems that will cost you on any older E class.

I’d also not be looking for a diesel for a general local run around, especially one that’s not ulez compliant. My choices would include looking at the following;

Audi S4/S6 V8
As mentioned Mercedes E500/S500
BMW 530i/750i
Volvo 2.4 T5/ 2.3 V70R
Lexus GS450H
Lexus IS250 (I bought one the other year as a spare runaround for all needs for anyone in the family that needs it. Comfortable, silent, well equipped, reliable, surprisingly fuel efficient, exceptional value for money)
