This may be a silly question. I have a W211 E320. I have normal tyres on at the moment. When I replace them can I put run flat tyres on my current alloy wheels?

I am not sure about fitting them in this case, but I know on the BMWs, people take RFs off and put normal tyres on as the RFs ruin the ride. RFs need to have tyre pressure monitors fitted for obvious reasons.

As I understand it, run flats fit standard alloys, but you need a tyre pressure loss warning system or else you will not know you have a puncture. You can only drive for 50 miles or so without destroying the tyre anyway.

Don't bother with them! I have them on my BMW and they're a crock of *****!
I'll be replacing them with non RFT when they're worn out.

You can replace RFT with conventional tyres but not the other way round as they need some way of securing to the rim to stop them coming off when punctured. On the BMW the rim has an additional lip inside to do this.

There's also the point of repairing them, most places won't as the sidewalls can be damaged by running them flat, even before the 50 mile limit.

If you don't want to change your tyre when you get a puncture, get a small compressor and some tyre foam to get you home. Failing that, call the AA/RAC

Are you sure about this, my understanding is that run flats can be fitted to ordinary wheels?

Only sure about my BMW, the rims have an additional lip inside, the tyre sidewall sits between the two which stops it wandering off the rim when flat. The sidewall is double thinckness (in simple terms) which gives it the strength and also ruins the ride as you lose flexibility.

Oh, also sure that I won't be using them again. :-D

I'll second that, don't bother with them. Whenever I have had a puncture the tyre has had to be changed rather than repaired as you have driven on it damaging the sidewalls (my BMW has no spare so there is no option of changing the wheel to prevent damage).

Also as you can only drive a limited distance on them you are stuffed if you get a puncture late at night/on a long journey etc.
