I have a 1999 E300TD. Recently the car has been running poorly. Everytime i put my foot on the brake pedal when the car isnt moving (no matter if car is in N, P or any gear) the revs drop and the car starts shuddering like it is gonna stall, but it doesnt it just sits shuddering. Also was having probs with cold starts and when did start got white smoke for a few secs from back of it and revs very lumpy for same time . Thought it was a a sticky injector so put some good quality injector cleaner through it and now cold start is harder and now get a bigger cloud of white smoke for about 10 secs after start and very lumpy then all runs fine. Anyone one had experience of this? or got any ideas what the problem could be?

Hi mate, your cold start/white smoke/lumpy idle problem will be your glowplugs. Does the light behave normally?

You can check these with a ohmmeter from the GP relay plug, they should read about 1 ohm wrt earth, any higher than this means they've failed.

Not sure about the brake related issue, I'd guess it's something to do with the vacuum system.

Does the vacuum system do much on these engines Hibbo

I'm not too sure about the turbo 606s to be honest Malcolm, Parrot is probably the man. I do know that they use electronically controlled IPs and gearboxes.

The EGR valve and various other valves around the turbo and in the intake manifold are vacuum actuated, I was thinking that at idle the demand placed on the vac system by the brake servo could upset them. Weak vac pump or duff brake servo maybe?

Just a thought!

have noticed the light goes out after a few seconds and then comes on again after the car has started, thought that was what it meant but wasnt sure, will change them asap.

You'll need a new intake manifold gasket too.

I'll post more info tomorrow mate (when I'm at work ;))
