the gauge is showing 55 to 60 degrees although i have had the thermostat changed. The car is running well and the heating is good, is it a faulty gauge ?

Diesels often run to cool in Winter, I used to blank off the bottom of the rad in winter

My 220 CDI is the same - I had thought of replacing the thermostat but probably not a good idea now. Very difficult to get above 60 deg, but if I used high revs it does increase. But most of my driving is around or below 2000 rpm I'll take Television's tip

Should be running nearer 80 after a few miles of driving. Just replaced my thermostat as it was running just below 60 tops and is back to normal now, cabin heats up a lot faster too and hopefully fuel economy will improve.

Make sure your fan is not running when the engine is cold.

Thanks Dan - yes I have seen a similar thread on this issue in the forum - I will replace the thermostat if as suggested elsewhere, when the temp gets to about 20 deg soon after setting off, if the radiator is warm, the thermostat is U/S

I had the same problem, temperature would reach 60 - 70 deg, but it was difficult to detect if the thermosatat was faulty. For example, I would stop and check the radiator temp by hand, it never felt warm so I thught the thermostat was OK.
The heater was also working fine, so I thought, but here's the test. When up to temperature set heater to max temp, if you can hold your hand next to a vent continuously the heater is not working to max capacity i.e. the water is not hot enough so the thermosta is faulty.
I've just changed the thermostat and the engine now runs at 80 deg, the heater is so hot you can'y keep you hand next to the vent for more than 10 seconds.
Hope this helps someone!
