That is rather on the cool side, but diesels are cooler than petrol.

Drive the car till the temp needel just start to get to 20, then open the bonnet and feel the rad, if the rad is warm anywhere, the the thermostat is U/S

excuse my ignorance but what is U/S mean

Sorry U/S = useless

If the rad is getting warm from the start, then the engine will never get warm

my 00 220 cdi only shows between 40 and 60 degrees on the temp gauge, is this normal for a diesel car.

CDI Diesels do seem to take a while to reach their normal operating temp of around 85 deg........i fairly recently fitted a new thermostat to my CDI ML because it was only reaching 65'ish, it now gets to the 85 deg area but needs a 10'ish mile drive to get there.

Just out of interest, after reading another thread discussing the subject of covering the radiator for a faster warm up........

A couple of days ago i covered approx 85% of my rad' with kitchen foil (by sliding it down between the rad' and condensor rad') and made my usual trip into a village ten miles from where i live as i was interested to see if it made any difference to the warm up time (always deserted roads so no queuing or stopping) .........Taking into account the ambient temp here has been fairly consistent and driving in my usual 'unhurried style' i found there was no difference in the time it took the guage to reach its normal temp of 85 deg. ..........(it then continued on towards the 90 deg mark at which point i removed the foil!!!!!)

Just been on another thread and yes the thermostat fixed it, and took the temp back up to 85c

They cost £28 and a little fiddly to fit but easy enough and you should not have to drain off to do it
