We're currently thinking of buying a 1994 E220 Coupe with 110,000 miles and which is in overall good condition. There is strange rust bubbling in a circle all around the Mercedes star and logo on the bonnet though. Hasn't come through the paint at all, just raised up bubbling. I'd say it extends about an inch out from the silver Mercedes logo that the star stands up in. The current owner says it was like that when he got the car 3 years ago, and has never spread. Has anyone seen this before on Mercedes ? Seems like a strange place for rust. First thing I noticed on the car and it looks ugly.

I talked today to a local body shop and they said it would probably need a full respray of the bonnet, and they quoted £320 + VAT which seems a bit steep.

All in all the car is pretty good and the price is okay, so I just want to see what I should try to haggle for about this blemish.

Also, drivers door window is a bit sticky, and needs a hand to close the final quarter inch. Is this a common problem, and is it a big or small job to fix ?

Probably a few other small things need repairs on it too. The owner couldn't get the headlight wipers to work, but that could be a fuse. Need a more intensive look over the car before committing to it.

Thanks

There could have been damage done by some gouser ripping the badge off in the past, and a less than satisfactory job done on it.

I has read here where some member got full bonnet resprays for less than 200 quid. It depends on what part of the country you live in, it seems. You bonnet will entail a lot of preparation of the rust area, but you should be able to get it repaired for under £300

Thanks for the info Pascal,

Sorry about the double post. It was only after I checked the site again after posting the first time that I saw the section for Bodywork etc...
I'm from Dublin myself, just over in rural England for about a year now.

I've since found that a bonnet from abreakers costs about £160 all in. Maybe best to buy the car and then wait for a bonnet in the same colour to show up in a breakers.
