I have seen various comments about what MB did to cars at a given point of time in the mid 2000's (not sure exactly when) which meant post this time cars are more likely to be rust free.

Can someone explain what they did, when and on which models?

Just curious....

04-03 was the point when all cars were galvanized.

This was followed up by the ceramic Nano paint in 04-04.

Thanks to Hawk for this info

The worst period was from 1998 to late 2002 after which the bodywork was galvanized. I had 1995 C250 that was and still is rust free yet my 2002 S320 has been to the bodyshop 3 times already for remedial treatment.
There is a good thread here:

Me too. My 1994 R129 is rust free, as are many others. Clearly MB had the problem cracked at that stage. Pity they tried cheese paring on costs and overdid it. Was that a result of the collaboration with Chrysler, I wonder, or did they manage it all on their own?

Sure did. It was around the front wing area, especially around the repeater indicator, and also the roof.
