As I am new to MB ownership, I have read with great interest (read fear) of the rust problems you have experienced with these grand cars. (It is curious that MB does not address this inherent problem)

I recently restored a couple of Convairs, which are fraught with rust problems. (they are at best forty years old at purchase} Of course the rust appears, primarily, in the underside of the car and in the innerside of the wheel wells (arches). If the rust has not eaten through the panel/s you can STOP RUST IN ITS TRACKS by applying this product.

It is called "POR 15". It is somewhat dear, but a little goes a long way. It does not store well after opening so do not purchase vast amounts. Always purchase in quart (or smaller) sizes. Wear gloves when applying, it will not come off skin for weeks.

I am amazed that I have not heard of this product in all the "Rust Threads" that I have read. I am sure that the product is available to you bloaks in country.

We do have some rust converters in the UK and I have seen the product that you mention advertised or somewhere.

Next time we have someone asking for one, I wil mention this product.

Thank you

Rust never sleeps

POR 15 has been used in the US for years. It penetrates rust and does not require much in the way of preparation. IT DOES STOP RUST IN TRACKS!!!

Do you really mean a couple of Convairs? Or Corvairs - I owned a '67 Monza. Well sorted handling by '67, but that b****rd Nader had done it in by then. Seems to have become a minor classic now.

Rust never sleeps

I had two (2) 1965, Corsa Convertible's. One a Turbo and one a 140hp. Both were the colour of "Evening Orchid" and both ended up 98 percent restored.

I don't doubt what you are saying, but in certain parts of the UK, the climate is very damp (all year round), stay near the coast & you get salt from the sea spray carried in the wind, all in all, perfect conditions for rust.

You just have to look at rust free old classic cars from California to see how the climate dictates the onset of rust.

I have used POR 15, mainly to coat the inside of my M/C tank (older, little used tanks can get terminal condensation/rust problems) I've also used it on some frame parts. It really keeps rust out and is tough as iron - sanding or scratching after a few days of curing is near impossible by hand

Its only for use out of sunlight however, since its not UV resistant. Sunlight doesn't harm it but it will finally lose its colour. Its great for chassis members, wheel arches tanks etc -just don't get it where you don't want it, because its a bastard to remove later.

Compared to ordinary auto paints, this stuff is Kryptonite.

If you check the US website at www.por15.com, it lists a couple of UK outlets, both auto restorers.

Rust never sleeps

My mate from Toronto cites his experience with POR 15 (fifteen) You would have to go far, to top the constant salt environment of the Eastern USA during the winter months of snow/ice removal. Prepare the metal per instructions and POR 15 literally kicks rust in the a*se. (Read their ad)
Here are Web sites in the UK where you can buy the stuff:
www.frost.co.uk
www.holden.co.uk
(I have no financial involvment in POR 15)

Thanks Rinehart, I have just taken delivery of some POR 15.
I'm in the UK and used your link to the American site and have ordered it from a UK stockist.
Thanks again Rinehart.

However I have a question, where the rust has bubbled on the bottom corners of the doors I assume I have to sandpaper this area down first and then treat as per instructed.

Car to be worked on is W202 C250TD sport reg 1998

Thanks all

Yes you do and all the paint around the bubble must be sanded off

Hi Jensen

I'd be a bit wary about using POR 15 on exterior sheet metal. It's comparatively thick and much harder than normal auto paint, and would be hard to "feather" into the existing paint. It would be fine to seal the inside closing edges of the door. I've only used it where I don't see it!

I'd check with your supplier before slapping this on the outside of any body panels.

There you have it. If you are going to see it, the only why to deal with it as he says. It is a bit more work in prepartion for color coat, but it is worth it in the long run. :)

To: Jet Tech
Your are right, :confused:I have never seen such an array. The only formula that I have worked with is on the 2nd page of their Ad, part #094 924; :-|If coating Outside, Painted panels, there is no easy way to do it right. TurboPete has it right: sand, apply Por 15, filler primer to feather it, prime and paint a top coat. See previous responses below.
